Dermaplaning is a safe and highly effective manual exfoliation procedure for your skin. A sterile surgical instrument is used to gently skim away dead skin cells and hair from the uppermost layers of your skin (the epidermis). Dermaplaning can help reduce the appearance of acne scars or other skin imperfections by revealing newer, undamaged skin.
The benefits of Dermaplaning include, immediate results, good for sensitive skin types, removes dead skin cells and peach fuzz, deeper product penetration, promotes glowing and smoother skin, can help reduce appearance of acne scars and diminishes the look for fine lines.
Who can have Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types except those with active acne and men with heavy facial hair. If you have active acne there are other treatments that may be more beneficial, as it is necessary to wait until breakouts are healed before having this treatment. This treatment is great if you are pregnant or nursing and want exfoliation without the use of chemicals.
What should I expect during my treatment?
Dermaplaning is a painless treatment that includes deep cleansing, professional exfoliation with a surgical tool, followed by a restorative treatment and finished with skin care tailored to your individual skin needs. Dermaplaning has a similar sensation to shaving which removes vellus hair (peach fuzz) and dead skin cells simultaneously.
What aftercare should I consider after this treatment?
After the treatment skin will be highly sensitive to sun exposure and may appear pink so it is important to wear broad spectrum SPF 30+ to reduce the risk of sun damage or further hyperpigmentation. Makeup should be avoided for 24 hours (unless mineral based).
How does Dermaplaning differ from a Chemical/ Skin Peel?
Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation process that does not use acids or enzymes to remove dead skin cells. All of the exfoliation is achieved during your treatment and you will not peel or visibly shred skin after, whilst some peels can cause some peeling in the days after the treatment. Dermaplaning provides a good alternative to peels for those who desire professional grade exfoliation without potential social downtime.
Will my hair grow back thicker and darker?
No. Dermaplaning will not alter your natural hair growth as it is removing vellus hair. Vellus hair is different to terminal hair (the thicker hair found on the body).
How long do results last?
It is recommended that the procedure should be repeated every 4 weeks which coincides with a normal skin cycle of around 28 days.
